I don’t sew.

Is it weird for a sewing machine technician to not sew? I can run a seam, I suppose, but I really enjoy the engineering of the machines. There is something quite beautiful about a machine that runs well, and I find it extremely satisfying to be able to bring a machine back to life, to be able to return a machine to its owner working as it should. A machine can be a puzzle, a challenge, something for my brain to work through, and I very rarely find that I cannot fix a machine given enough time to think it through.

More than the machines, though, I love hearing the the stories behind the machines. I get to meet the owners, the users, and get to know them through their sewing machines. Each machine, just like each person, has its own personality and character, and as we all have our quirks and idiosyncrasies, so do the sewing machines.

This blog will explore machines and the relationships we have with them. It will also probably include other random thoughts and other essays around other parts of life.
